Kelis - Trick Me

Kelis works her way under your skin with this silky smooth song of the year. She's been busy working on her milkshake and teaming up with Andre 3000 for Millionaire but this is the pick of the bunch. Hypnotic.

Picture it, you fancy someone, they don't know about it, you've spoken to them once, they are out of your league, they don't know you exist, they don't fancy you, they would laugh if you attempted to talk to them. You go home (alone) and stare out of the window. It's raining outside, you turn the radio on and bam! Teenage angst revisited, it's a beautiful thing *bottom lip wobbles*.

Yes, it's the Eminem that we know and like. He comes across like a rapping big brother with his Michael Jackson piss-take, weird noises and jabbering on all set to the usual formula of background beats and bass that marks it out as an Eminem track. Undeniably, it's the chorus hook that carries this song, backed up by the humour vibe that emerges even without the video to push it. Some might think that MJ is an easy target to poke fun at, but hey - who cares? Eminem definitely doesn't.

Estelle - 1980

Who does she think she is? '1980, year that God made me', that makes everyone over the age of 24 bitter about the fact that they don't have a hit record and probably never will have. Apart from this, I like it, It's catchy, and yes, I sing along to the radio with this one, but only the chorus. '99 I started to write rhymes'. Well, I suggest you don't read the lyrics, they're pants, but I hadn't noticed till now, so job well done.

Morrissey - First Of The Gang To Die

Like many others I re-discovered Morrissey in 2004. Suddenly there he was, indulging in the full-on media merry-go-round. Firstly proving that Jonathan Ross's interviewing technique definitely does not suit all! And perhaps even more surprisingly talking to the NME for the first time after a souring of the relationship some ten years before. But for me it was the uplifting experience of hearing the opening lines of "First of the gang to die" whilst driving through the streets of Tooting at sunrise on a Sunday morning in June that prompted me to buy "You are the Quarry" purely on the strength of this single. (The experience seriously almost up there with hearing "Reel around the fountain" for the first time over twenty years ago. Can it really be that long?) Against the odds, Morrissey has fought back from no record deal to UK top ten single status and Platinum album sales, even referencing aspects of life in the USA as successfully as the references to "dear old Blighty", that we all know and love (or hate)!

Whilst the halcyon days of watching kids tv are well and truly behind me (inspite of the dogged persistence of all and sundry endeavouring to remind me via the medium of DVD), slabs of other aspects of the 1970s keep on returning. "Mary" to my mind sounds almost as if it could BE Elton John, ludicrous glasses and all, delicately twinkling the ivories of some grand Steinway piano, no doubt in Madison Square Gardens, about 7.42pm, July 14th, 1975. Dame Elton made a megabucks fortune in the States, becoming one of the biggest American acts of the 1970s. The SS (may need to reconsider that abbreviation) are from New Yoik, and similarly have had bigger success on foreign shores. I can't help but feel us Brits are the winners here.

Goldie Lookin' Chain - Guns Don't Kill People Rappers Do

What you can say about the GLC without sailors walking out is not a lot. But they are original, with a whole ranch of satire that reminds me of Tenacious D. Both bands deliver their goods in a spot on manner, albeit in a slightly different style. They are a band borne out of the frustrations of living in a drab South Wales town (Newport) a place well known for its underground clubs (e.g. Newport Tg's). GLC bring much needed humour to a South Wales that has never known how to laugh at itself. My only worry about GLC is that they will depart from the music scene before they get a chance to indelibly mark it with their own humour. Also of worth and an amusing listen is the Radio 1 take off of this song called "dogs don't kill people wabbits do".

Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved

She will be loved is a bitter sweet love song about a girl who just needs love. The point of view is from a lover who in reverse just needs a bit of love as well. "Please don't try so hard to say good-bye" is repeated throught the ending of the song which gives the sense that the girl wants to run away from some heart break, but the singing lover wants her to run to him. In the video of this song it is a medley of an affair with a young gir and her mother, this could not be more perfect for the song. Just listening to the song gives a mood of wanting more out of life, and love. One can not help but to sing along and feel the tragic love that comes from the lyrics. The music its self almost sounds like a beating heart with the rythem of the drums and makes the listener want to connect. This song is great to listen to in a hot bubble bath with a relaxing aroma, or driving down an open highway.

Review from the perspective of the younger element: fkn l! D Strts r bk innit. Mike Sknnr iz so a chv 4eva bt stl wkd n mkng gr8 trks ;-)

Review for those more advanced in years: Ah the vicissitudes of youth! Holidays abroad with one's beer-addled mates, clocking onto a gorgeous young popsy whilst queuing for high-cholesterol food, but losing out to a rum cove far more likely to add her to the domestic violence statistics - we've all been there.

I'm still pushing my 'This Is Folk Music For The Noughties' theory. Any takers?

Kelis - Milkshake

Artist link:Link to Top 50 of 200450

Kelis is one of those artists that always does things differently and very memorably, she broke into the mainstream screaming how much she hated you so much right now. Her song "Milkshake" is one of the standout tracks on her album "Tasty". With its distorted bass sound and its suggestive lyrics it is a very catchy and memorable song and well worth a listen. All that hear this track first time should be enticed to go out and check out her album.
